Seattle: Looking forward and looking back

Greetings from Seattle on this unique, sunny day!

UPP Seattle, aka SUPP, finished our fall/winter project with a bang. Our SOUL spray paint canvas mural is now hanging proudly in the RecTech lab at the Garfield Community Center. The teens worked hard to design the mural and conceive of the SOUL notion.

The fall/winter project was an awesome learning experience and we’re really excited to establish a new project based on what we’ve discovered. Spring is in the air now and it’s a great time to plant the seeds for an exciting project fusing technology and creativity. Stay tuned for details!

Seeking Out Understanding and Learning

SOUL spray paint canvas mural.

This week marked the last spray paint workshop for SUPP. The teens were eager to expand on some of the themes that emerged in last week’s class and came up with the concept of SOUL: Seeking Out Understanding and Learning. Even though it was once again freezing cold, they worked hard all the way until the sun set and came up with a fantastic painting!

Anzhané and Jaibrean worked until long after the sun set to complete their SOUL canvas mural.

Intro to Spray Paint

Nia creates her first aerosol painting.

On Wednesday afternoon, the girls of SUPP had a lesson in spray painting. Even though the weather was freezing, we all had a great time and are looking forward to doing more next week! Except for our great instructor Emily, most of us had never used spray paint before. Check out these photos, videos and new blog entries describing our experience!

Learning and Growing

For those of you following the progress of UPP Seattle, aka SUPP, you may have noticed that it’s been slow going. We’ve had some major delays with our community center out here, we’ve lost touch with our partners in Palestine, and we haven’t had much success with student recruitment.  All in all, it feels like a giant failure! But. But!

We have a few weeks left of our winter session and in spite of having zero contact with Palestine, our kids are gearing up for a series of spray paint workshops with which we hope to go out with a bang.

Some possibilities for ways we can improve in the coming weeks include partnering with a group in Scotland in lieu of Palestine, thoroughly documenting and posting our progress with our spray paint project, and planning to do it all again in the spring based on what we’ve learned from our mistakes.

Even though it hasn’t gone at all as planned, I’m excited to build on this tiny little foundation for future projects. Thank you to everyone who has been so supportive throughout this process. More posts coming very soon!

UPP Seattle Joins Facebook!

UPP Seattle has had several setbacks in recent weeks, not getting the anticipated student turnout and having a rough go of getting local teachers and orgs to hop on board with us. But I’m happy to say that several local teachers and community organizations have been really helpful in introducing me to potential students. I want to give a great big thanks to Karen Kasoglad at Nova High School, Jason Dunkerly at Franklin High School, Ed Mast at the Palestine Solidarity Committee, Edgar at Friends of the Children, and Nikitta Vinson and Brooke Kempner at the Garfield Community Center.

One thing that I’ve learned through these interactions with young folks is that it’s pretty much required for UPP Seattle to have a Facebook page to stay in touch with our students and teachers. I’m proud to announce that page is now up and running! Check it out, comment and post as you wish! And stay tuned: we shall be starting our creative workshops in May.

With love from Seattle,

Katie

Greetings from Seattle!

Welcome to the Seattle branch of the Unfinished Picture Project! After several delays, we are gearing up for our introductory forum in the coming weeks.

The plan is to order some pizza, introduce ourselves, and get down to business, deciding on our themes and intentions for the project through games and activities. We’ll also discuss finding a mural space, plus review the rules for using the computer lab. Navigating the time difference is tricky (Nablus is 10 hours ahead of Seattle), so the group in Nablus prepared short videos for us to watch. We can’t wait!

Stay tuned for updates from the Emerald City!
